Blessing of the Candles | Purification of Mary Mass

Sunday, February 2nd marks the fortieth day after Christmas, on which the Church celebrates the Presentation of Christ in the Temple and the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

In St. Luke’s Gospel, Simeon’s prayer of thanksgiving at this event concludes with the words: “A light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of Thy people, Israel.”

As such, it is customary for the Church to mark this occasion by blessing candles for the year ahead. If you’d like to have your candles blessed, then please bring them and join us at the 9:00 AM service on February 2nd.

Make sure to bundle and tag your candles with your family’s name for easy retrieval, and place them on the wooden table to the left of the pulpit before the service begins.
