Enrich Your Life of Prayer

Silent Retreats

We regularly host half or full day* silent retreats at the church, creating a space of prayer and contemplation for individual spiritual growth. Each retreat begins with Morning Prayer and a brief meditation, followed by a time of silence with opportunities for adoration, confession, and spiritual direction, concluding with Holy Communion. View our Events page for more details on our next retreat. Please contact Fr. Hayden at hayden@stmatthewsnewport.com with any questions.

*For full day retreats, lunch is provided at a nominal fee.

The Book of Common Prayer

At the heart of the Anglican way is prayer. The Book of Common Prayer contains the essence of what Christians have been praying since the time of Jesus. It gives us a daily rhythm that shapes our days with prayer while leading us through the Scriptures over the course of the year. The English is in an older form, and this is important because that means the language of prayer is truly common--it doesn't belong to the slang or style of any living generation--and it connects us to the Christians who have gone before us. With a little practice and adjustment, we begin to pray with a language that unites us with other Christians praying throughout the world and throughout the centuries. For help with learning to pray with the BCP, please contact any of our clergy or staff--we'd love to walk you through it.
